Foods to Avoid
ORTHODONTIC DIET
Congratulations on starting your orthodontic treatment! You are on your way to a beautiful, healthy smile. In order to make sure your treatment goes as smoothly as possible you will need to be careful when eating. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar must be avoided. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Minimize sugary foods; they cause tooth decay and related problems. NAIL BITING, PENCIL AND PEN CHEWING, AND CHEWING ON FOREIGN OBJECTS SHOULD BE AVOIDED
Examples of Sticky Foods to AVOID:
- Gum
- Licorice
- Caramels
- Tootsie rolls Sugar Daddies
- Toffee
- Gummy bears
Minimize Sugary Foods:
- Cake
- Candy
- Pie
- Soda
- Drinks with sugar Cookies
- Ice Cream
- Chocolate
- Gatorade
Examples of Hard Foods to AVOID:
- Ice
- French bread crust/ rolls
- Pizza Crust
- Bagels
- Jolly Ranchers
- Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces) Hard taco shells
- Chips
- Nuts
- Corn on the cob
- Popcorn
Examples of Soft Foods you can have:
- Yogurt
- Pasta
- Oatmeal Soup
- Noodles
- Jell-o Mashed potatoes
- Smoothies
- Pudding Scrambled eggs
- Bananas
